Love is not efficient

efficiency_light_bulb

ef·fi·cien·cy (iˈfiSHənsē)

noun

“The ratio of the effective or useful output to the total input in any system.”

Love isn’t efficient.

Love is often “wasted” on those who are slow to change, or will never change.  Can we withhold love because we see no change?

Love is often “wasted” on those who only use people, and take others for granted.  Can we withhold love because people don’t deserve it?

Love is often “wasted” on those who hate others and clothe themselves with violence.  Can we withhold love because it is only answered with hate?

Love is often “wasted” on those who will turn their backs on us in betrayal.  Can we withhold love because it’s not always reciprocated?

Efficiency is desirable in any situation where the input substance is in limited supply.  You need bang for your buck when you don’t have very many bucks.

But love is not a limited resource.   It comes from the unlimited Source of all life.  The Bible says God is love.  God is unlimited, providing an unlimited supply of love.

So when it comes to love, efficiency isn’t a consideration.  The only consideration that matters is that God has first loved us.  He loved us when we refused to change, used people, hated others, and turned our backs on him.  Loved us anyway.

How can we not aspire to such a beautiful expression of true love?

It’s never a waste to love people.
