AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: Be A People Person by John C. Maxwell

9781610458634I can’t think of anyone better to write a book entitled Be A People Person than John C. Maxwell.  Throughout his long and illustrious career as leadership guru, he has emphasized the importance of team, collaboration, and synergy in accomplishing shared goals.  He brings many of these ideas together into one volume with Be A People Person.

There are some great ideas in this book, and in typical Maxwell fashion, they are very applicable in a variety of contexts: church, business, home, and interpersonal relationships in general.  The book is definitely directed towards leaders in particular.  As a more introverted leader, I appreciate Maxwell’s encouragements and tips for relating to people more naturally.  There were three chapters that stand out to me as particularly applicable: “How To Be Confident With People,” “Motivating People For Their Benefit,” and “You Can Be An Encourager.”  The chapter titles give a small glimmer of the great treasure found within.

Maxwell is very fond of illustrations, stories, pithy anecdotes, and quotes.  Sometimes he comes across as cheesy and trite with these stories, and his jokes often land with a corny “plop.”  However, even when his style doesn’t connect with me, his considerable wisdom and experience are certainly apparent and lend weight to his many relationship maxims.

There are a few other books by John Maxwell I would recommend more readily than this one.  However, there are many beneficial ideas to be found here.  Leaders, you may want give it a look; especially if, like me, being a people person doesn’t come as naturally to you as it does to that select minority made up of folks like John Maxwell.  Skill with people can be developed, and this book could be an invaluable part of that development journey for you.

The narration by Lloyd James in the audiobook version is very well done.
