{"id":740,"date":"2013-06-26T08:12:56","date_gmt":"2013-06-26T14:12:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nickduffel.com\/?p=740"},"modified":"2013-06-26T08:12:56","modified_gmt":"2013-06-26T14:12:56","slug":"the-truth-about-ideas-from-the-archive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nickduffel.com\/?p=740","title":{"rendered":"The truth about ideas [from the archive]"},"content":{"rendered":"<body><p><\/p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nickduffel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/1231095760acbnqzp.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"1231095760ACBnQzP\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nickduffel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/1231095760acbnqzp.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/a>\n<p>Where do all your great ideas come from?<\/p>\n<p>Good ideas aren\u2019t born in a vacuum.\u00a0 They come from a mash-up of our experiences, circumstances, learning, wisdom, and probably a whole host of other elements.\u00a0 Ideas are molecules, not atoms.<\/p>\n<p>As a leader, I spend a lot of time with people.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been in leadership for a while, but I\u2019ve only just began to appreciate people as a dependable source of great ideas.\u00a0 It only makes sense, and I\u2019m pretty dense (usually) for not grasping it sooner.\u00a0 If ideas are the children of our experiences, circumstances, etc. then isn\u2019t it obvious that gaining insights from a select few would deepen the gene-pool?<\/p>\n<p>Why a select few?\u00a0 Well, just like all ideas aren\u2019t created equal, idea-people aren\u2019t either.\u00a0 Sound mean?\u00a0 Maybe, but if you have the time to listen to hundreds of ideas and sort through the bad and good to find the best, be my guest.\u00a0 This is one area where quality trumps quantity.\u00a0 Better to listen to people who have one great idea out of three than one out of twenty.<\/p>\n<p>The most important consideration here is that your select few must be people who will present ideas that challenge you as well as the status quo (because often YOU, leader, ARE the status quo).\u00a0 The best ideas are pervasive and transformative.\u00a0 They get under your skin.\u00a0 The truth can be uncomfortable; the unknown, scary. \u00a0Do your people have the courage to be honest with you? \u00a0Have you given them permission to be?<\/p>\n<p>One last thing about ideas and idea-people.\u00a0 The best ones don\u2019t care if they get the credit.\u00a0 Give it to them anyway.<\/p>\n<\/body>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Where do all your great ideas come from?
