Because when you trust someone, you choose to place a piece of your future in their hands.\u00a0 It\u2019s a piece of you, really.\u00a0 Their success becomes your success.\u00a0 Their failure becomes your failure.\u00a0 Now they can hurt you where it counts.\u00a0 Reputation is on the line.\u00a0 The secret is out.\u00a0 The project is handed off.\u00a0 The car keys are handed over.\u00a0 Now what?\u00a0 It could go either way.<\/p>\n

I believe that a most of the courage we must have as leaders should be dedicated to the matter of trusting people.\u00a0 I mean, really trusting people with things that matter.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been burned by people before, I know.\u00a0 They\u2019ve failed us and left a mess for us to clean up.\u00a0 Here I am asking you to possibly go through that again.\u00a0 Why do we even bother?<\/p>\n

But have we forgotten how much it meant for someone to believe<\/em> in us?\u00a0 Not just to say it, but to give us care over something that really mattered to them.\u00a0 At that moment we realized we could really mess things up, but we also knew the kid gloves were off.\u00a0 This was the real deal.<\/p>\n

And more often than not, we rose to the occasion.\u00a0 Because no person likes to be sold short, and nearly every person wants to feel the exhilaration of being trusted.<\/p>\n

As leaders we can give people the exhilarating gift of trust!<\/p>\n

But we won\u2019t give the gift if we\u2019re so afraid of failure that we can\u2019t take the risk, or we\u2019re so cynical that we no longer believe people capable, or we\u2019re so fixated on our own glory that we won\u2019t share credit.<\/p>\n

Leaders, we didn\u2019t begin this journey only to be reduced to risk-free, glory-seeking loners, did we?<\/p>\n

We must trust people with things that matter.\u00a0 Someone did it for us, now let\u2019s go do it for someone else!<\/p>\n<\/body>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
